  1. MORE INFORMATION ABOUT LINGVO FOR DOS AND WINDOWS

  5.     This document contains important information not
  6.     available in the User Guide or in online Help.
  7.  
  8. WORKING WITH RUSSIAN DICTIONARIES WITHOUT CYRILLICS
  9. DRIVER INSTALLED
  10. ###################################################

  12.     To translate English words into Russian or back 
  13.     using Lingvo for Windows, you should install any 
  14.     Windows Cyrillics driver (see chapter 2 of section IV in 
  15.     the User Guide).
  16.  
  17.     However, you still could make use of Lingvo for Windows 
  18.     without having installed the driver. Just do the 
  19.     following:
  20.  
  21.         1. Copy XLAT866.BIN file from the installation 
  22.         disk to the Windows directory.
  23.  
  24.         2. Use Notepad or any other ASCII file editor to 
  25.         open SYSTEM.INI file from the Windows directory. 
  26.         Find the [keyboard] section of SYSTEM.INI file 
  27.         (generally the second section in the file). Look 
  28.         for the string that starts with "oemansi.bin=".  
  29.         Place the column sign ";" before the first 
  30.         character of the string.
  31.  
  32.         3. Insert an empty string immediately after the 
  33.         string you have changed and type in the 
  34.         following:
  35.  
  36.             oemansi.bin = xlat866.bin
  37.  
  38.     This is sufficient to work with Lingvo for Windows using 
  39.     English as interface language. The only problem will 
  40.     remain when using the Headword Window for translation 
  41.     from Russian to English, because you still could not use 
  42.     the keyboard to type in Russian letters.
  43.  
  44.     If you want to use Russian in menus and messages you 
  45.     should manually change the system font in Windows. In 
  46.     this case do the following:
  47.  
  48.         1. Locate font files named EGASYSR.FON, 
  49.         VGASYSR.FON and 8514SYSR.FON on the installation 
  50.         disk.  Files are named according to the monitor 
  51.         type.  Choose the file that fits your monitor 
  52.         and copy it to the Windows directory.
  53.  
  54.         2. Use Notepad or any other ASCII file editor to 
  55.         open SYSTEM.INI file from the Windows directory. 
  56.         Find the [boot] section of SYSTEM.INI file 
  57.         (generally the first section in the file). Look 
  58.         for the string that starts with "fonts.fon=". 
  59.         Place the column sign ";" before the first 
  60.         character of the string.
  61.  
  62.         3. Insert an empty string immediately after the 
  63.         string you have changed and type in the 
  64.         following:
  65.  
  66.             fonts.fon = <filename>
  67.  
  68.         where <filename> will be replaced by the name of 
  69.         the font file you just copied into Windows 
  70.         directory. For example, if you are using a VGA 
  71.         monitor, the string will look like this:

  73.             fonts.fon = vgasysr.fon
  74.  
  75. BE CAREFUL! Any improper or accidental changes to the SYSTEM.INI 
  76. file may lead to the Windows hangup or malfunction.

  78. You can return Windows to it's previous state by removing column 
  79. signs and the strings inserted according to the previous 
  80. instructions.
