MORE INFORMATION ABOUT LINGVO FOR DOS AND WINDOWS
VERSION 4.0

WORKING WITH RUSSIAN DICTIONARIES WITHOUT CYRILLICS
DRIVER INSTALLED
###################################################
To translate English words into Russian or back
using Lingvo for Windows, you should install any
Windows Cyrillics driver (see chapter 2 of section IV in
the User Guide).
However, you still could make use of Lingvo for Windows
without having installed the driver. Just do the
following:
1. Copy XLAT866.BIN file from the installation
disk to the Windows directory.
2. Use Notepad or any other ASCII file editor to
open SYSTEM.INI file from the Windows directory.
Find the [keyboard] section of SYSTEM.INI file
(generally the second section in the file). Look
for the string that starts with "oemansi.bin=".
Place the column sign ";" before the first
character of the string.
3. Insert an empty string immediately after the
string you have changed and type in the
following:
oemansi.bin = xlat866.bin
This is sufficient to work with Lingvo for Windows using
English as interface language. The only problem will
remain when using the Headword Window for translation
from Russian to English, because you still could not use
the keyboard to type in Russian letters.
If you want to use Russian in menus and messages you
should manually change the system font in Windows. In
this case do the following:
1. Locate font files named EGASYSR.FON,
VGASYSR.FON and 8514SYSR.FON on the installation
disk. Files are named according to the monitor
type. Choose the file that fits your monitor
and copy it to the Windows directory.
2. Use Notepad or any other ASCII file editor to
open SYSTEM.INI file from the Windows directory.
Find the [boot] section of SYSTEM.INI file
(generally the first section in the file). Look
for the string that starts with "fonts.fon=".
Place the column sign ";" before the first
character of the string.
3. Insert an empty string immediately after the
string you have changed and type in the
following:
fonts.fon = <filename>
where <filename> will be replaced by the name of
the font file you just copied into Windows
directory. For example, if you are using a VGA
monitor, the string will look like this:
fonts.fon = vgasysr.fon
BE CAREFUL! Any improper or accidental changes to the SYSTEM.INI
file may lead to the Windows hangup or malfunction.
You can return Windows to it's previous state by removing column
signs and the strings inserted according to the previous
instructions.
